“Our farmers are really proud of their work in providing the chickens a better standard of welfare. Everyone at Rangitikei farms sees this as an un-breakable promise to our chickens, our consumers and the NZ community, that we will work hard to excel in these standards every single day.”
For the first few weeks of life, Rangitikei chickens are raised in a large barn, in conditions similar to what a nesting hen would provide; the right amount of warmth, humidity, feed and water. It is at this stage that the chickens are most susceptible to disease and environmental conditions so it’s especially important they are protected and cared for.
When the chickens reach 18-21 days of age, the barn doors are opened during daylight hours to provide them access to a grassed area where they are free to roam and forage during daylight hours. Rangitikei chickens are fed a combination of grains, minerals and vitamins to ensure the birds receive a nutritionally balanced diet. This balanced diet ensures that the birds remain healthy, and do not experience deficiencies of proteins, vitamins, or minerals.
As well as lots of fresh air, our Rangitikei chickens also enjoy a longer growth cycle and less density in bird numbers inside the barn. The free range lifestyle is the recipe for fresh from the farm, top quality chickens.
Rangitikei believes that following the “Five Freedoms” principles of animal welfare is a standard their farmers will honour every single day.
Freedom from Hunger and Thirst: Ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain health and vigour.
Freedom from Discomfort: Provision of a nice environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.
Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease: Through prevention, speedy diagnosis and treatment.
Freedom to Express Natural Behaviour: By providing space, proper facilities and the company of other animals.
Freedom from Fear and Distress: Ensuring conditions and treatment avoid mental suffering.
We are committed to producing food in a way that protects the welfare of all chickens in our care by meeting or exceeding the requirements of the New Zealand Animal Welfare Code. We partner with New Zealand’s largest and most established provider of food assurance, animal welfare and biosecurity services, and are proud to carry the AsureQuality AQ Certified Animal Welfare Assurance Mark.
The AsureQuality Standard that underpins the AQ Certified Mark has been developed with extensive input from independent industry and animal welfare experts and sets rigorous and robust criteria with more than 111 requirements and measures across all our farm, processing and administrative activities.
